Isolated solitary hepatic calcification in a neonate

Presentation

Term newborn, IUGR.

Patient Data

Age: 8 days
Gender: Male

The liver is of normal dimensions, its borders are regular and its echotexture is preserved. Focal calcification measuring 3 mm across in segment 8.
The gallbladder is contracted, does not contain stones. Intra- and extrahepatic ducts not dilated.

Case Discussion

Born on the 39th gestational week, small for gestational age (SGA) due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

Echocardiography - small patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and patent foramen ovale (PFO), both with left-to-right shunting. Physical examination normal except for mild hypertelorism and a broad nose.

Head ultrasound normal. Abdominal ultrasound normal except for a single focal hepatic calcification.
