Isolated trapezoid fracture

Presentation

Received a blow against the hand while playing basketball. Pain at the base of the 2nd metacarpal.X-rays showed no fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 30
Gender: Male

Vertical fracture line through the trapezoid bone, running mainly in the coronal plane. No displacement. Hemorrhagic (T1 hyperintense) effusion in the radial wrist joint.

Case Discussion

Isolated fractures of the trapezoid bone are uncommon, due to its protected position. It actually is the least commonly fractured carpal bone.
