Isolated trapezoid fracture

Presentation

Car accident. Pain at the base of the second metacarpal.

Patient Data

Age: 33-year-old
Gender: Male
X-ray

Left hand and wrist radiographs

Nondisplaced fracture through the lateral aspect of the trapezoid bone. 

CT

Oblique fracture line through the lateral proximal aspect of the trapezoid bone extending into the joint. No evidence of loose body. Joint space are preserved. The reminder carpal bones are unremarkable, with no evidence of other fractures or malalignment.

Case Discussion

Isolated trapezoid fractures like this one are rare and represent less than 1% of the carpal fractures. This case was managed conservatively, with casting.
