Case contributed by Dr Andrew Dixon

Incidental finding on trauma CT

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Bilobed predominantly low density mass extends from the posterior fossa through the left jugular foramen and into the neck with smooth expansion of the left jugular fossa.

Partial resection of the mass was performed between the CT and the MRI. Residual well-defined lobulated mass extending through the jugular foramen with cystic components.  Atrophy of the left side of the tongue has developed since the CT in keeping with interval left hypoglossal nerve palsy (denervation).

Case Discussion

Left jugular foramen schwannoma (histologically confirmed) with typical appearance of smooth expansion of the jugular foramen and cystic degeneration.
