Kartagener syndrome

Occasional tachypnoea. Total situs inversus, nasal polyposis.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Bronchiectasis of the varicose type is present in all the bronchi of the "left" lung located in the right hemithorax, and in the "right" lung middle lobe bronchi in the left hemithorax (i.e. situs inversus). In addition, abdominal situs inversus mediastinalenal shift to the right are observed.

Case Discussion

Kartagener syndrome is characterised by the clinical triad of: 

  • Situs inversus
  • Nasal polyposis
  • Bronchiectasis                            

  In addition, CT demonstrates:

  • mosaic perfusion
  • impacted mucus in bronchioles

Eventually, scarring may result from recurrent infections.
