When faced with a case of possible dextrocardia, one should begin by checking the labelling to ensure the case hasn't simply been put up backwards. Sometimes, extreme patient rotation or pathology may result in a distorted placement of the mediastinum. If left with no other option, then checking the position of the abdominal organs (stomach bubble and diaphragmatic impression the liver) is important to establish the situs status of the patient.
