Patient Data
Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
From the case:
Lateral ankle ligaments injury
Ultrasound
Longitudinal
Ankle joint
- mild effusion in the anterior recess
Anterior talofibular ligament
- loss of continuity at the proximal end suggested by a full-thickness fluid cleft
- the rest of the ligament is edematous
Calcaneofibular ligament
- continuity is maintained
- the ligament is edematous, hypoechoic in its caudal half
Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament
- intact with normal echo pattern
Case Discussion
Ultrasound findings favor a lateral ankle ligament injury which is a common sports-related injury due to inversion.
