Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
Ultrasound

Ankle joint

  • mild effusion in the anterior recess

Anterior talofibular ligament

  • loss of continuity at the proximal end suggested by a full-thickness fluid cleft
  • the rest of the ligament is edematous

Calcaneofibular ligament

  • continuity is maintained
  • the ligament is edematous, hypoechoic in its caudal half

Anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament

  • intact with normal echo pattern

Case Discussion

Ultrasound findings favor a lateral ankle ligament injury which is a common sports-related injury due to inversion.
