Lateral epipharyngeal cyst

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

Presentation

Headaches, right conductive hearing loss, recurrent serotympanon.

Patient Data

Age: 75
Gender: Male
MRI

Cystic lesion in the right pharyngeal recess (fossa of Rosenmüller), behind the paryngeal ostium of the Eustachian tube.

Case Discussion

The differential diagnosis of lateral epipharyngeal cyst is somewhat different from that of midline lesions. It involves seromucinous (66%), intra-adenoid, oncocytic, and branchial cysts1.

Cysts arising directly from the Eustachian tube are often dermoids, that contain variable amounts of fat2.
