Lateral malleolus fracture - Weber type C

Presentation

Fall onto the supinated and externally rotated right foot. Tender lateral malleolus.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

Ankle radiographs revealed a comminuted isolated lateral malleolus fracture above the tibiofibular syndesmosis level (Weber type C).

Post-operative

x-ray

Radiographs performed immediately post-op. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the fibula. Screw fixation of the tibiofibular syndesmosis was also performed.

Case Discussion

Isolated lateral malleolus fractures represent the most common pattern of ankle fractures.

The most widespread classification systems are the Weber and Lauge-Hansen, although neither are used to reliably guide treatment.
