Lateral nasal abscess

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

1 week of pain and swelling in the right naris with cellulitis of overlying skin.

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Male

Egg-shaped cystic mass arising form the right lateral nasal wall at the naris with overlying soft tissue swelling.

Case Discussion

The likely etiology of this cystic inflammatory mass is an obstructed hair follicle in the nasal mucosa and development of an abscess (folliculitis). It is not in the midline, thus it is neither a septal abscess nor a midline dermoid that is infected. It is too anterior to be an infected nasolabial cyst.
