Lateral patellar dislocation

Case contributed by Bahman Rasuli
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Recent history of direct knee trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
mri

Marked joint effusion is seen.

Bone marrow edema/bruise in both the patella medial pole and lateral femoral condyle due to prior recent patellar dislocation.

Abnormal intrasubstance increased fluid signal is seen along the course of the medial patellofemoral ligament related to MPL sprain.

Abnormal intrasubstance increased fluid signal also is present along the course of the ACL fibers related to ACL sprain.

Swelling and abnormal increased fluid signal indicative of tendinopathy in the popliteus tendon at its origin from the lateral femoral condyle extending into its bony groove is noted.

Case Discussion

Reciprocal bone marrow edema at the patella medial pole and the lateral femoral condyle is compatible with lateral patellar dislocation.
