Smoker. Breathless. Cause?

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
X-ray

Triangular (or sail shaped) density behind the left heart border, with volume loss in the left hemi-thorax.

Inferior descent of the left hilum.

Right lung clear.

Case Discussion

The classical appearance of a left lower lobe collapse - the triangular density appearing like the sail of a traditional boat hence the term 'sail sign' attributed to this appearance.
