Left lower lobe collapse

Case contributed by Dr Michael Paks

High speed motor vehicle accident: imaging from trauma series.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
On the mobile chest x-ray, a triangular retrocardiac opacity and double cardiac contour sign are noted consistent with left lower lobe collapse.

The chest CT more clearly demonstrates complete collapse of the left lower lobe. There are also small pneumatoceles of the lateral right middle lobe and anterior right upper lobe with surrounding patchy consolidation.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates a comparison between the appearance of left lower lobe collapse on portable AP views and axial imaging.
