Left lower lobe collapse

Case contributed by Michael Lousick
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Dyspnea, cough and coryzal symptoms. Known history of COPD.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Patient rotated to the left. Triangular opacity in the left lower zone suggestive of left lower lobe collapse.

Case Discussion

A nice example of a retrocardiac sail sign indicative of a left lower lobe collapse. Note the loss of the left hemidiaphragm medially and preservation of the cardiac contour.

A lateral CXR would help confirm the diagnosis but unfortunately was not available. A repeat radiograph 5 weeks later showed resolution of the collapse.
