Left renal infarct

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Sudden severe left renal angle pain ? renal colic

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Male

Initial CT KUB showed focal renal swelling thus CT angiogram was performed.

Wedge-shaped region of non-enhancement with filling defect in the anterior segmental branch of the left renal artery consistent with infarction. These clots are usually embolic in aetiology but no cardiac source was found. A patent foramen ovale was eventually detected by "bubble" echocardiography, i.e. paradoxical thromboembolism
