Left sided inferior vena cava

Presentation

Post lower anterior resection of the rectal carcinoma under follow-up.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male
Modality: CT

Incidentally noted left-sided inferior vena cava (normal variant).

Non-complicated diverticular disease seen in the large bowel. Status post lower anterior resection of the rectum with an unremarkable operative bed.

Unchanged previously noted fat attenuated periaortic lymph nodes. 

Case Discussion

Transposition of inferior vena-cava (also known as left sided IVC) refers to a variant course of the inferior vena cava. It is the most common anomaly of IVC and occurs due to persistence of left supracardinal vein.
