Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Patient Data

L4/5 central and left subarticular zone disc extrusion with impingement of the descending left L5 nerve root. No L4/5 foraminal narrowing.

Case Discussion

Appropriate and accurate use of terminology in lumbar disc disease is important. Careful review of the subarticular zone is worthwhile because it is a common site (along with the foraminal zone) of nerve root impingement.
