Left superior vena cava

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Patient presents with chest pain and shortness of breath ?PE. Incidental finding.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Male

Isolated left SVC entering the right atrium via the coronary sinus.  Note no "normal" right-sided SVC.  Azygos vein is also left-sided entering the SVC above the right main bronchus (arrows).

Case Discussion

Most left-sided SVC cases have a duplicated SVC on the right and left.  It is unusual to have only a left sided SVC and I note that the azygos vein is also on the right of the aorta entering the SVC on the right above the right bronchus (rather than the left).
