Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Male

Radiograph revealed bilateral coxa plana (i.e. flattening and widening of the femoral heads) and coxa magna (i.e. widening of the femoral necks). There is sclerosis of both femoral epiphyses.

Case Discussion

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, or just Perthes disease, is characterized by idiopathic osteonecrosis of the proximal femoral epiphysis. It is an exclusion diagnosis and other causes of osteonecrosis should be discarded.

The disease is usually unilateral, but in the present case, there is bilateral Perthes disease.
