Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
ct

Diffuse white matter hypodensity in both cerebral hemispheres, periventricular, with areas of old lacunar infarcts, suggestive of chronic microvascular disease.

Left parietal encephalomalacia area, keeping with old infarction.

mri

Diffuse white matter hyperintensity signal in both cerebral hemispheres in t2W images and FLAIR sequences, involving subcortical and deep white matter periventricular region.

Multiple areas of old lacunar infarcts in periventricular region and fronto-parietal lobes, exhibit CSF signal intensity.

Encephalomalacia gliosis area in left parietal lobes.

Areas of hyperintensity in T2WI and FLAIR sequences in brainstem, and in left middle cerebellar peduncle.

Case Discussion

Leukoaraiosis refers to white matter bilateral and either patchy or diffuse areas of hypodensity on CT or hyperintensity on T2-weighted MRI.

Leukoaraiosis is associated with stroke, as in such case.
