Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency. Elevated D-dimer. Rule-out pulmonary embolism.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

There is fat-attenuating thickening of the interatrial septum with sparing of the fossa ovalis compatible with lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum.

Other findings:

  • negative for pulmonary thromboembolism
  • abdominal fat herniating into the lower mediastinum through the esophageal hiatus
  • heterogeneous bone densities with mixed lucent and sclerotic foci for which correlation with bone scan was suggested

Case Discussion

Lipomatous hypertrophy of the interatrial septum is a benign condition characterized by mass-like fatty deposits in the interatrial septum with sparing of the fossa ovalis.
