Patient Data

Age: Child
mri

Selected images from a full-spine MRI. The spinal cord shows normal caliber and signal intensity but extends abnormally low, reaching down to the level of L5. Between L2/3 and S1, a fatty mass is shown dorsal to the distal cord and contiguous with subcutaneous fat through a bony defect posteriorly. The fatty mass-neural placode interface is within the spinal canal.

ct

Single axial image from a CT confirms the presence of a fatty mass within the spinal canal associated with deficient posterior elements.

Case Discussion

Findings in keeping with a lipomyelocele with tethered cord.
