Lipomyelomeningocele

Presentation

Pediatrician noticed subcutaneous fatty mass above the intergluteal crease in a neonate. No focal skin defect. Antenatal ultrasound reported as normal.

Patient Data

Age: 3 weeks
Gender: Male

There is spina bifida at the level of swelling (S3-S4 level). There is lipomatous tissue, covered with skin. Neural tissue of spinal cord exists through spina bifida and enters the lipomatous tissue. The spinal cord ends at S1-S2 level. There is no syrinx in visualized spinal cord.

With crying of the baby, the swelling shows outwards bulging while scanned.

Case Discussion

Pediatrician referred a neonate with swelling just above the level of intergluteal cleft. Ultrasound shows findings of lipo-myelomeningocele. MRI was performed later confirming findings (not uploaded).
