Lumbar nerve root tumour

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Presentation

Incidental finding on abdominal imagining for other reasons.

Patient Data

Age: 70-year-old
Gender: Female

CT Abdomen and pelvis (selected images)

Modality: CT

Selected images demonstrating a well-defined enhancing mass mildly expanding the right L2/3 intervertebral foramen. Some ill-defined hypodense central areas.

MRI Abdomen (selected images)

Modality: MRI

The foraminal mass is again noted confirming the heterogeneity seen on CT due to small cystic/necrotic component.

Case Discussion

Incidental finding on abdominal imaging of a nerve root tumour enlarging the L2/3 intervertebral foramen. The differential diagnosis is made basically between schwannoma and neurofibroma, the first favoured.

This case was managed conservatively, no histological confirmations was obtained.
