Lung cancer

Case contributed by Sally Ayesa
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Cough and chest discomfort.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

There is a large, rounded mass-like opacity in the left lower lobe. No calcification or cavitation is demonstrated.

Volume loss in the right hemithorax with some distortion of parenchymal lung markings in the right lower zone.  Background coarsened lung markings with peribronchial thickening consistent with underlying chronic airways disease.

No pleural effusions.

Case Discussion

The left lower lobe mass was subsequently confirmed as primary lung cancer. The patient had been previously treated for a right lung cancer which accounted for the volume loss in the right hemithorax and lower zone parenchymal distortion.
