Lung cancer: hilum overlay sign

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Known biopsy proven lung cancer. Re-admission with shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female

Large mass in the right hemithorax.   The right paratracheal stripe remains despite the mass extending to the midline indicating the mass does not lie in the mediastinum.

The right hilum is also clearly delineated projected over the mass, indicating this is not a hilar mass.

Left lung clear.

Heart size normal.

Case Discussion

This was a proven lung malignancy - the lung mass it large and illustrates well the hilum overlay sign.
