Lung cancer with superior vena caval invasion

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Recent right upper lobectomy for adenocarcinoma of the lung. Now chest pain and shortness of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female

Very large mass in the right upper lobe at the site of previous excision invading the mediastinum, entering the SVC as tumor thrombus (arrow).

Case Discussion

SVC obstruction is usually due to extrinsic compression by mediastinal tumor.  It is rare for tumor to invade the wall to enter the lumen.
