Luxatio erecta and greater tubercle fracture

Presentation

Fell while jogging, injured the right shoulder. Upon presentation the right arm is fixed in an elevated position.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Antero-inferior shoulder dislocation with the resultant fixed elevated position of the arm. Superimposed on the surgical neck of the humerus a wedge-shaped fractured fragment is also visible (see key image). Findings are in line with luxatio erecta and concurrent greater tubercle fracture. 

After reposition

After reposition the humeral head is in a normal position, whilst the greater tubercle fracture is only minimally displaced. 

Case Discussion

Inferior shoulder dislocations often result in a fixed elevated position of the arm (luxatio erecta), and are commonly associated with bony injuries.
