Diagrams illustrating the Mach effect. The 3rd image has the boxes separated, which removes the effect.
The Mach effect is an optical illusion, due to retinal lateral inhibition, which causes edges of darker objects adjacent to lighter objects to appear lighter then they truely are and vice versa thereby creating a false shadow, which may mimic injury or disease.
