Malignant cyst: left breast

Case contributed by Garth Kruger

Development of a palpable lesion in her left breast.

Patient Data

Age: 61 years
Gender: Female

The lesion is cystic but has a thick wall. This is not a simple cyst.

Post aspiration you can see the needle in situ with the residual post thick wall. Simple cysts disappear on aspiration.

Case Discussion

Aspiration yields adenocarcinoma cells.

No post menopausal woman should develop anything in her breast generally speaking. Any developing lesion in a post menopausal breast should be regarded with suspicion.

Simple cysts should be simple and should disappear completely on aspiration. Not all breast cancers are solid.
