Malpositioned PICC

Requires long-term antibiotics for wound infection. Post PICC insertion.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

Left PICC heads up the left internal jugular vein, tip is not visualized. This is not in an appropriate position for use.

Case Discussion

Image-guidance greatly reduces the rate of malpositioned PICCs. The correct position of the tip is in the superior vena cava or at the cavo-atrial junction (depending on institutional policy). 

This PICC was subsequently successfully repositioned.
