Presentation

Newborn experiencing acute respiratory distress.

Patient Data

Age: 1 day
Gender: Female
x-ray

The UVC is seen terminating in the SVC, and the UAC terminates at T3-4 level. Mild haziness in the lungs may be due to RDS. Mild diffuse prominence of the cardiac silhouette, mild central pulmonary vascular congestion, interstitial edema, and small bilateral pleural effusions are concerning for TTN.

No discrete pneumothorax on either side. No discrete osseous anomaly.

Case Discussion

Malpositioned umbilical venous catheter and umbilical arterial catheter cause negative health outcomes. Specifically, UVC malpositioning is associated with necrotizing enterocolitis 1. Other complications include infection, vascular compromise, hemorrhage, and catheter severance 2.
