Malrotation with midgut volulus

Case contributed by Dr Chris Luis

16 day old with bilious vomiting

Patient Data

Age: 16 days
Gender: Male

Water soluble contrast was administered via the patient's nasogastric tube.

Initial images showed rapid emptying of the stomach into a moderately dilated proximal duodenum which showed at least two full turns before emptying into jejunal loops within the right abdomen.
Findings in keeping with malrotation and midgut volvulus.

Case Discussion

The patient was immediately taken to theatre and the diagnosis of malrotation with midgut volvulus confirmed. Fortunately, no ischemic bowel was found intraoperatively.
