An elderly lady is sent for breast imaging with a large palpable subareolar mass left brest.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
Mammography

Standard CC and MLO views of the left breast. Interpreted as normal. Easy fatty parenchyma with virtually no glandular opacification. Good quality images of diagnostic standard.

Ultrasound

An obvious solid mass in the subareolar left breast.

Case Discussion

A normal mammogram in a lady with clinically and on ultrasound and biopsy, a large infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the left breast. Up to 10% (depending on which reference you quote) of confirmed breast carcinomas are occult on mammogram.
