Mandible fracture (pediatric)

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis certain

Child hit by car. Swollen jaw. Clinically a fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Male

Displaced right parasymphyseal fracture 7mm from the midline. The fracture extends into the unerupted 42 tooth.

Undisplaced right subcondylar fracture.

No orbital fracture.

Case Discussion

Pediatric mandible fractures are less common than in adults. Basically, they don't fight with the same intensity as adults!

This is an interesting case with consideration for surgery as the fracture extends into the unerupted 42 tooth. This makes the routine fixation approach difficult.
