Mandibular condyle fracture/dislocation

Presentation

Fighting. Punch to the face. Left sided tenderness and unable to open mouth properly.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Male

Fracture of the left mandibular ramus with dislocation of the left mandibular condyle which is displaced medially.

Left mandibular condyle fracture dislocation with medial displacement of the condyle. The midline mandibular fracture is also now visualsed.

Post-operative fixation of the left mandibular condyle fracture and midline mandibular body fracture.

Case Discussion

This case highlights two important points:

  • always clearly identify the position of the mandibular condyles in the TMJs in trauma
  • look carefully for the second fracture because they often occur as pairs

CT is very helpful for clarification of the exact injury.
