Mass lesion right breast (invasive ductal carcinoma)

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

A 55 year old woman has had no previous imaging. She is sent for screening.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years old
Gender: Female

The mammogram shows an asymmetrical density at 9 'o clock right breast. The patient is recalled for additional imaging. Here are the ultrasound images.........

This solid lesion is called a fibroadenoma.

These are the biospy images. The case was reviewd by a breast imager who did not concur with the original Biards II diagnosis. This is a Birads IV lesion. Confirmed IDC.

Case Discussion

Review the ultarsound characteristics of a fibroadenoma.

On the biospy images make sure the needle traverses the elsion i.e. the throw goes through the area you want to biopsy. If the needle does not traverse the lesion on firing, you are sampling the breast short of the lesion. The needle needs to run right through the lesion. You need to see what is shown in the second bx image.
