Presentation

Shortness of breath, known atrial septal defect.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

Massively enlarged pulmonary arteries, lungs clear, no pleural effusion.

Case Discussion

This patient developed pulmonary hypertension secondary to a left to right shunt caused by a secundum type atrial septal defect seen on an echocardiogram (not shown). Other left to right shunts that may result in pulmonary hypertension include ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus.
