There is a well-circumscribed, heterogeneous, solid to focally cystic mass with thin peripheral rim and septa. The solid areas are composed of yellow adipose tissue and pale chalky material while cystic areas are partly smooth walled, in areas associated with hair. Image courtesy of AFIP. Mature cystic teratoma is a common neoplastic mediastinal tumor, predominantly seen in children and young adults.
On histology, the lesion is characterized by elements variably derived from the three germ cell layers (endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm).
