Meconium aspiration

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Term baby. Meconium at delivery. Respiratory distress.

Patient Data

Age: 1 day (term)
Gender: Female

NG tube in appropriate position.

Widespread linear opacities extend from both hila. No confluent consolidation. Small right sided effusion. Appearances are of meconium aspiration given the history.

Case Discussion

Respiratory distress in the context of fetal distress or with a history meconium in the liquor should point to meconium aspiration as the prime diagnosis.
