Medial collateral ligament avulsion injury

Case contributed by Dr Bahman Rasuli

Knee trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

Avulsion fracture of the femoral attachment of the medial collateral ligament is noted.

Minimal joint effusion is seen.

Cruciate ligaments mucoid degeneration is seen.

Patella chondromalacia as cartilage thinning and fraying associated with subchondral cystic changes are seen at the mid to medial facet joints of the patella.

Backer cyst measuring about 20*34 mm also is seen.

Case Discussion

Avulsion fracture at the femoral origin of the MCL is uncommonly associated with the bony fragment arising from the posterior aspect of the medial femoral condyle and irregularity of donor site in the background of valgus stress injuries.
