Medial collateral ligament rupture

Case contributed by Henry Knipe

Presentation

Fell from a horse.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Full-thickness distal tear of the superficial medial collateral ligament with retraction and redundancy. Medial meniscocapsular fibers are disrupted. No medial tibial marrow edema. Soft tissue edema surrounds the pes anserinus.

Osteochondral impaction injury of the peripheral portion of the weight-bearing surface of the lateral femoral condyle.

Case Discussion

Somewhat typical hypervalgus mechanism of injury with the lateral femoral condyle osteochondral injury (although this case is missing the corresponding typical lateral tibial plateau marrow edema) and full-thickness tear/rupture of the medial collateral ligament.
