Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

Diffuse thickening and periligamentous edema involving superifcial and deep fibers of femoral attachment of medial collateral ligament. Degenerate torn posterior root of medial meniscus with mild extrusion. Grade 2 degenerate anterior root of lateral menicus. Grade 2 anterior cruciate degeneration. Focal cystic degeneration of upper outer margin of lateral femoral condyle. Moderate suprapatellar effusion. Grade 4 lateral patellar chondromalacia with patellar subchondral cystic degeneration.

Case Discussion

Following a traumatic event, the extensive edema that surrounds an injured ligament reduces the sensitivity and specificity of reporting. The femoral attachment of the injured medial collateral ligament is engulfed in edema and makes our diagnosis below par. Whilst some fibers are intact, the extent of tear will only be better judged once imaging is reviewed after three to four weeks.
