Medial meniscus bucket handle tear and semimembranosus injury

Presentation

Sports injury.

Patient Data

Age: 16 years
Gender: Male

Small knee joint effusion. Small Baker's cyst. Posterior capsular edema. 

Extensive soft tissue edema in the posterior distal thigh with a muscle belly injury to distal semimembranosus with extension into the distal myotendinous junction and proximal free tendon (BAC grade 2c).

Bucket handle tear of the medial meniscus, with small posterior parameniscal cysts. Lateral meniscus is intact.

Case Discussion

This case is an example of both gross intra- and extra-articular pathology. While there is no strong published association between these two injuries, patients can have their knee in any position with excessive force applied from any other direction when injured leading to uncommon patterns.
