Medial tibial stress syndrome

Presentation

About 4 weeks prior to the presentation, the patient started running for about 5 kilometers a day along with other physical activities. Presented with a complaint of bilateral shin pain for the last 2 weeks.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

At the site of pain pointed to by the patient there is anechoic subperiosteal fluid rim involving the anteromedial shaft of the tibia in mid-third of both legs. There is no cortical erosion / large subperiosteal collection.

Case Discussion

A young female started recently running as a physical activity followed by bilateral shin pain. Ultrasound shows a subperiosteal fluid rim involving tibia at the site of pain. The case shows a typical history and ultrasound findings of a shin splint.
