Presentation

Left leg pain.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

Mild periosteal edema on the medial cortex of the tibial diaphysis on the left.

Bone marrow edema of the left tibia visible on both T1 and T2 images

Similar minimal changes are noted in the right tibial diaphysis as well. 

Case Discussion

Periosteal edema is the most frequent imaging finding for stress injury. Also, usually, bone marrow edema can be seen. Nowadays, MRI is a very sensitive tool for detecting edema.  However, the final diagnosis of tibial stress injury depends on both imaging findings and clinical features.
