Presentation
Right lumbar pain
Patient Data
Clusters of calcification are seen around the corticomedullary junction of both kidneys. The right kidney is swollen. Two calculi are seen in the right distal ureter; the one at the vesicoureteric junction is causing an obstruction resulting in moderate upstream hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Umbilical hernia containing fat and mild fat stranding is also seen.
Case Discussion
Medullary nephrocalcinosis refers to the deposition of calcium in the medulla of the kidney. A major complication of this condition is urolithiasis leading to acute presentation with ureteric calculi (as shown in this case)
