Megaesophagus post gastric banding

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Incidental finding of echogenic mass posterior to the left atrium on echocardiographic examination for investigation of chest pain/discomfort

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Female

Grossly distended food-filled esophagus (sitting behind the left atrium) and proximal stomach up to the gastric band and collapse more distally. The patient has lost considerable weight (note the absence of subcutaneous fat) and does not want the balloon on the band deflated as she is happy with the weight loss despite the epigastric discomfort!
