Intra-operative smear preparation
H&E
Intra-operative smear/crush preparation shows meningothelial cells clumping together forming small whorls. Cytoplasmic content smears into characteristic "Batman's cape" shape between the cells. These are to be distinguished from fibriliary processes from astrocytic tumours. Typical appearances of a meningothelial meningioma.
Case Discussion
Meningothelial meningiomas are the most common extra-axial tumours of the central nervous system. They are a non-glial neoplasm that originates from the arachnoid cap cells of the meninges.
