Meningioma - with abundant edema

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Headache and altered personality.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

MRI brain

At the anteromedial aspect of the left anterior cranial fossa is an extra-axial vividly enhancing mass associated with marked vasogenic edema with resultant subfalcine herniation. A CSF cleft is visible around the mass.

Case Discussion

The patient went on to have a craniotomy and excision of the mass which confirmed the diagnosis of a meningioma. Some meningiomas result in significant edema in the adjacent brain. This is only sometimes due to direct invasion.
